"Never-never Land"

In a world of extreme development, lives sigh. What is the use of human bodies?!

In a world of extreme development, lives sigh. What is the use of human bodies?!
Unlock Dancing Plaza staged its production "Never-never Land", with a duet dance by Artistic Director Ong Yong Lock and Taiwanese dance artist Chou Shu-yi, in 2016. Irrespective of their age, Ong and Chou can genuinely feel the usefulness and uselessness in their bodies through their dance, and notice that people change along with the world’s ups and downs.

In a society of extreme development, we are all striving to keep up with the time while human evolution is becoming more complicated. ‘Usefulness’ is a war of fight, a void of emptiness, some sedimentation and hopes. Faced with all these, how shall our body proceed?

"Simon Says"

Hong Kong x France Collaboration

Between obedience and alienation, let the game begin!
The premise was simple, let’s combine two childhood games: Simon says and the electronic parlour game Simon with its four coloured buttons where players have to recreate sequences associating sounds and colours. What they both have in common is the risk-taking, self-control, concentration, adrenaline rush… as well as the fact that both happen in a space of obedience and alienation.
With this basic idea of two games with four players, dancers from Hong Kong – who Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh met during a workshop there – travelled to Le Havre to continue working with her. Improvising, making and breaking rules as they went along, reflecting on the results, then letting go – a new challenge for the four more used to learning and assimilating choreographed steps – Simon says grew out of the artistic interface between these two approaches, blending efficiency, mastery, a love of games, and ever-reformulating situations. Between submission and rebellion, let the game begin!

Boy Story ‧ Reborn @ Taiwan Cloudgate Theatre

Boys of Two Generations Come Together to Revive a Classic and Subvert the Present

Boys of Two Generations Come Together to Revive a Classic and Subvert the Present
Hong Kong choreographer Yuri Ng, known for his quirky genius, was awarded the Prix d’Auteur at the Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis (Bagnolet) in France in 1998 for his "Boy Story". The prestigious work, premièred in Hong Kong back in 1996, is a classic which marks a glorious chapter in the history of Hong Kong dance. Ingeniously choreographed for six male dancers, it explores the anxiety towards self-positioning and identity. It portrays the boys’ romantic yet persistent pursuit of dreams in the city through body language.

19 years later in 2015, Ong Yong Lock, a dancer in the première of "Boy Story" and now the Artistic Director of Unlock Dancing Plaza, has reunited with the original cast comprising performers from Malaysia and invited veteran Taiwanese dancer Chou Shu-yi to revive the classic. The reunion also gave birth to a new combination, "Boy Story • Reborn", which undermines the allure
of its predecessor and delineates the fearlessness and tenacity of a new, reinvigorated generation. Through drama, deconstruction, reinterpretation, and the 20 years of history between Boy Story and Boy Story Reborn, dancers of a new generation gradually assume their predecessors’ mantle with each body movement and leap on stage.

The coming performances of "Boy Story • Reborn" at the Cloud Gate Theater will mark the 20th anniversary celebration of this legendary dance work. Don’t miss out!

Popular pianist of Hong Kong, Phoebus Chan, will exercise his diverse and hypnotic best to lead the dancers into the nooks and crannies of performance-form classical music to hip-hop, acrobatics, contemporary dance, dance theatre, modern dance, post-modern dance, pre-modern dance… and more. Well, we are not going to point an accusing finger at the government, the bankers, the developers… but we won't take things hands down either! We have our tricks up our sleeves. We would dance on tip-toe on the dead serious profile of our city mapped out by town-planning. We would do the hip-hop with romantic abandon. So take it from us—that's our attitude, those are our dream.

Dance Moves, Kung Fu and Tofu is a multi-media production jointly directed by Ong and Chan Chi Wah, with set and costume by Yuen Hon Wai, lighting by Lee Chi Wah, sound by Edmund Leung and visuals by Chris Chan. Ong will also perform some works inspired by classics from choreographers Willy Tsao, Helen Lai, Yuri Ng and Pun Siu Fai. Tofu represents Ong's philosophy of life - simple and down-to-earth and with hints of kung fu, the work reflects his enthusiasm and passion for dance. "As time passes, my body cannot be replaced nor can it be cloned. Through sweat and ideas, however, I hope the audience can feel every flowing part of me" Ong said.

His great sense of life and love, professional experiences in dance field for years and the recent choreography work "Beyond", had inspired him to continue the 'journey' to explore the depth of love that connected to us. The limitation on the extraordinary sense of touch in living and love should not exist. It ought to be the existence of oxygen on this planet, to serve all the interdependent livings. Once you are ready, brave yourselves to breath, but at the same time, feel free to hold your breathe. "Whisper of Love" is to pursue the ordinary sense of touch from the extraordinary world.
